The history of the Gers is a rich one; the department is home to a large number of chateaux dating from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, some of which are open to the public. A circuit of less than 200kms gives you access to Condom, at the heart of the armagnac industry, Lectoure with its cathedral and ramparts, and Auch, the departmental capital and reputedly the home of Dartagnan, the famous musketeer. There are also other interesting cathedrals and churches that can be visited and the following list is by no means exhaustive. Auch - a large cathedral, recently restored but dating from the 14th century. Also, a lovely small local church with fine stained glass windows. La Romieu - an abbey church of the collegiate, dating from the 14th century, with beautiful cloister and access to a tower that offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Flarans - 10th century abbey with periodic exhibitions of art and statuary. Lectoure - a cathedral that commands the town from the ramparts and constructed in a variety of styles over an extended period from the 14th to the 16th century. Condom - the second city of the department with an impressive 16th century cathedral. La Chapelle - a tiny church located in a small hamlet that was restored in the 19th century in stunning Baroque style.
